We open our season with an homage to one of North America’s icons of jazz, Nina Simone. Writer, poet and activist, Nina’s music provides the soundtrack for Alysa Pires’ newest piece commissioned by Citie Ballet. Opening the evening is a new work by Citie Ballet artistic director Jorden Morris.
Two new dynamic pieces come together in our second performance of the season. Former Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal soloist Brett Taylor presents Gate 3, his energetic narrative of human movement and the emotional intersections that occur along the way. Taylor brings a contemporary choreographic voice within a strong balletic foundation. The second piece features Edmonton choreographer Kiera Keglowitsch’s exploration of the mental turmoil and relationships between artists, the creation of their work and the dynamics at play with critical self-thinking. This work is beautifully framed by digitized projections created in collaboration with the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.
Our final production of the season honours the return of spring – we celebrate that spirit with stories that reflect emergence and change. Citie Ballet artistic director Jorden Morris presents a new work accompanied by two new pieces by company dancers Lydia Redpath and Matthew Klippenstein.
