An Homage to Billie Holiday

An Homage to Billie Holiday

Oct. 4th 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5th 2:30 p.m.

Timms Centre for the Arts

An homage to the soul-drenching music of jazz singer Billie Holiday, this piece reflects the singer’s blend of technical mastery and unparalleled soul with dancing of intense physicality and great humanity. Holiday—or Lady Day, as she was otherwise known—was a tortured performer, and is best known for songs such as “Strange Fruit,” and “Body and Soul.” This features a mixed program that ranges from classical to contemporary.

Featuring choreography by Alysa Pires.

Timms Centre for the Arts

The fourth in a series of collaborations with Edmonton artists, this performance features the a cappella sextet 6 Minute Warning, singing their own original pop/rock compositions. Mosaic IV: Vocal Beat is the story of a small-town man who struggles to maintain his roots amid the frantic storm of city life. He attempts to piece together his newfound life with an urban woman, one born of the city, while weathering the changes that she brings.

When Looks Can Kill (Orpheus and Eurydice)

When Looks Can Kill (Orpheus and Eurydice)

April 18th 7:30 p.m. April 19th 2:30 p.m.

Timms Centre for the Arts

Two bodies cry for one another — for a shared touch, an embrace, but if the hero Orpheus looks upon his love, Eurydice, she will die. Will Orpheus stay strong, or give in to the needs of his flesh? Set to the music of Christoph Gluck’s opera, this classic Greek myth of carnal desire places you in the midst of temptation where you yearn with the characters.
